Safety Data Sheet
Getting an SDS for Dimethoate
A Safety Data Sheet is written for a product, not for a substance: the supplier of the grade you actually buy issues it, so two suppliers of Dimethoate issue two different sheets. That is why there is no single authoritative SDS for a substance to download — what there is, is the job of collecting the sheets for the products you hold and keeping them current as suppliers revise them.
04 · Precautionary statements
Dimethoate precautionary statements
CLP Annex VI assigns 7 precautionary statements to Dimethoate. They are grouped the way a label groups them: what to do before handling, what to do when something has already happened, how to store it and how to dispose of it.
Prevention
What to do before and during handling so the hazard never happens.
Response
What to do once exposure, spillage or fire has already happened.

05 · Names in the regulation
Dimethoate name in 23 EU languages
CLP Annex VI Part 3 is published in every language edition of the regulation, and the identification column is written out in each of them. Nothing below is translated by us: each line is the name as that edition prints it. Under Art. 18(2) the substance name from Annex VI is a lawful product identifier, so this is the wording to put on a label going to that market — and where the cell lists several designations, any one of them qualifies.

Dimethoate health hazards and exposure limits
Dimethoate hazard summary
An erythema-multiforme-like contact dermatitis has been reported; [Kanerva, p. 1783] A cholinesterase inhibitor that can be absorbed through skin; May have adverse effects on human reproduction, based on animal studies; [ICSC] Has the highest reported incidence of poisonings (none life-threatening) of the organophosphates used in residential applications; No evidence of delayed neurotoxicity in hens; [Reference #2] Delayed neuropathy has been very rarely reported in humans, and seems to result from severe poisoning; Not likely to cause delayed neuropathy under normal levels of exposure; May cause an intermediate syndrome that can be life threatening; Symptoms developing 1-4 days following exposure include weakness of proximal limb muscles and neck flexors and respiratory distress; Four cases have been reported and involved ingestion of large amounts; [EFSA] The average of two baseline respective cholinesterase activity determinations three days apart, with no exposures to enzyme inhibiting pesticides for at least 30 days, is recommended for each worker prior to exposure to cholinesterase inhibitors because of large inter-individual differences in published baseline values. To be established at least once a year. Removal from workplace exposures is recommended until the cholinesterase activity returns to within 20% of baseline. [TLVs and BEIs] See Omethoate.

An IARC group and a CLP classification answer different questions. IARC judges whether the evidence for cancer in humans is strong enough; CLP Annex VI is the legally binding EU classification. A substance can carry one and not the other.

Dimethoate storage conditions
The biological activity remains practically unvaried for 2 yr under environmental conditions, provided stored in unopened and undamaged original containers, in shaded, cool, well-aired places, inaccessible to animals & unauthorized persons. Recommended temp < 25 °C/77 °F. Crystals may form in formulations stored at < 32 °F/0 °C. Stable a minimum of 1 yr at < 25-30 °C/77-86 °F. Stack containers to permit air circulation at bottom & inside of piles. Do not contaminate food, feed products.

Dimethoate incompatible materials
Dimethoate may decompose violently at temperatures >60 °C due to catalytic effects. However, it is not considered to be an explosive.

Dimethoate reactivity
DIMETHOATE is incompatible with alkaline preparations. It is slightly corrosive to iron. It is incompatible with sulfur based formulations. (NTP, 1992). Organophosphates are susceptible to formation of highly toxic and flammable phosphine gas in the presence of strong reducing agents such as hydrides. Partial oxidation by oxidizing agents may result in the release of toxic phosphorus oxides.

11 · Questions
Dimethoate — frequently asked questions
What is the CAS number of Dimethoate?
The CAS number of Dimethoate is 60-51-5. Its EC number is 200-480-3.
What does a Dimethoate label have to show?
Under CLP Annex VI the label for Dimethoate carries the pictogram Exclamation mark and the signal word is Warning.
Is Dimethoate flammable?
CLP Annex VI assigns Dimethoate no flammability hazard class. That is not a statement that it cannot burn: the harmonised list only records the hazards that were assessed for it. The flash point reported for it is 107 °C (224.6 °F), closed cup (HSDB).
Is Dimethoate a carcinogen?
CLP Annex VI records no harmonised carcinogenicity classification for Dimethoate. Annex VI is a list of agreed classifications, not a list of substances found safe, so this is an absence of a classification rather than a clean bill of health.
What is the boiling point of Dimethoate?
The boiling point reported for Dimethoate is 107 °C (224.6 °F), at 0.05 mmHg (reduced pressure) (HSDB).
What is the melting point of Dimethoate?
